4.21213 reviewsWe are traveling needing a good stopping point. The was clean and nice sized. The Queen bed was comfortable. We got a good night's sleep, breakfast was okay. Due to New Year's day the restaurant was not open for dinner when we arrived. It it is 4 blocks to the main square where several restaurants were open for dinner.
Hotel was one of the cleaner ones we had stayed at. Staff was friendly and courteous. They offer continental breakfast which was not half bad. And the hot water shower was a blessing. Location wasn't that great as we had to park on the street because all of the parking area had been taken but no issues with that as it was right in front of the hotel. But overall was a great experience.
Is a nice place for rest, have a good service and the breakfast is included.
Planning your trip to Cordoba
When to go
Córdoba sits at around 800 metres on the flank of Veracruz's Altas Montañas, and the altitude explains everything: none of the sticky heat of the port, but a great deal of rain. Typical days run 25-28°C and nights drop to 15-17°C. What you notice is not the thermometer but the permanent humidity.
The wet season runs June to October, with afternoon downpours that last an hour and leave the streets steaming. From November to February the nortes blow in: grey skies, the fine persistent drizzle locals call chipi-chipi, and 13-18°C that feels colder in the wind. Pack a rain shell whatever month you come.
February to May brings the clearest skies, when Pico de Orizaba shows its full cone from the Fortín road. Those are also the months to book early: Holy Week, the long weekends and the December holidays fill what little hotel stock the city has, and rates barely move because there is nothing to compete over.
Getting there and around
Córdoba lives off the 150D toll road. Mexico City is four and a half to five hours' drive, Puebla two and a half, the port of Veracruz a long ninety minutes. The bus is the simple answer: the ADO terminal covers all three, with Mexico City fares generally in the MX$500-900 range depending on class and how far ahead you book.
There are no commercial flights into Córdoba. Veracruz airport is the practical one, just under two hours away by road; Puebla and Mexico City work if the fare justifies the extra driving. Buses from the airport terminals run often enough that you rarely need to arrange a private transfer.
In town, the grid of numbered avenues and streets is easy to read, and from Parque 21 de Mayo you can walk to almost everything in fifteen minutes. Short taxi rides cost roughly MX$40-80, and shared vans and local buses run constantly to Fortín and Orizaba for small change.
A car opens up the coffee country — Amatlán, Huatusco, Coscomatepec — and the Metlac ravine with its railway bridge. Two honest warnings: fog drops without notice on the bends towards Fortín and Orizaba, and rural roads in the state are best not driven after dark. In daylight and on the toll road, no problem.
Where to stay, zone by zone
The historic centre around Parque 21 de Mayo is the obvious choice for a leisure trip: cathedral, the arcades of the Portal de Zevallos, small museums and coffee houses all on foot, and a plaza that stays busy into the evening. The trade-offs are traffic noise in the avenue-facing rooms and parking that usually means a lot around the corner.
Along the exits towards Fortín and the old federal highway you find the roadside and business hotels: own car park, larger rooms, no charm whatsoever. They make sense if you arrive late by car, if you are working the Córdoba-Orizaba industrial corridor, or if you are leaving early for the coast.
Fortín de las Flores, eight kilometres up the road, is the green alternative: garden hotels and, on clear mornings, Pico de Orizaba over breakfast. It is quieter, but you will need a car or a colectivo to come back into Córdoba for dinner.

Eating and going out
Córdoba takes coffee seriously — it is traded, roasted and drunk here, not merely served. The arcades on the plaza are the obvious place to sit for an hour with a lechero or an americano, for something like MX$30-60 a cup. The better roasts come from farms in the sierra that starts a few kilometres uphill.
Cheap eating means Veracruz antojitos: picadas, gorditas, empanadas, tamales wrapped in banana leaf, and chileatole when the corn is in. A set lunch runs around MX$100-150; a sit-down dinner with a beer more like MX$250-350 a head. The municipal market is the best breakfast in town, and it closes early.
Nights are quiet. There are cantinas and a handful of bars in the centre, busier on Friday and Saturday, but this is not a nightlife city: people go out to eat, and by eleven the plaza is thinning out. For more of a scene, Orizaba's riverside walk is half an hour away.
Booking well

Since the rates cluster, spend your attention on what actually changes the stay: a walkable location, parking included, and an interior room if you sleep lightly. Ask whether breakfast is in the rate — around here it often is, and the coffee is worth getting up for.
Given the humidity, ask for a well-ventilated room and trust your nose on arrival; damp is the standard complaint in older buildings in the centre. A fan or air conditioning earns its keep from April to September. Heating does not exist, so during a norte ask for an extra blanket.
Midweek is when work travellers take the rooms, so Sunday and Monday tend to offer the best availability for a short break. And if everything shows sold out, check Fortín de las Flores before giving up: it is fifteen minutes away and often has space when Córdoba does not.
