About staying in Durango

Durango is a colonial capital almost nobody puts on a list, and the quiet in its streets shows it. The Centro Histórico — cathedral, Plaza de Armas, the pedestrian Calle Constitución, a cable car running over the rooftops — can be walked end to end in one afternoon. Everything else is boulevards lined with chain hotels built for work trips: mining, timber, state government. Our 2026 scans logged 11 hotels with a real price: from US$55 a night, with a typical from-rate of the order of US$87. It is a small market, so deep bargains are rare. And you are at 1,880 m: winter nights hit freezing.

Durango hotel FAQs

Which area should I stay in?

The Centro Histórico if you came to see the city: the cathedral, Plaza de Armas, Calle Constitución and the cable car are all within a few blocks, and a handful of old townhouses have become hotels. If you are here for work or driving, the chain hotels on Boulevard Felipe Pescador and 20 de Noviembre give you parking and predictability, 10-15 minutes from the centre by taxi.

When is Durango cheapest?

Most of the year except July, when the Feria Nacional and the city's anniversary fill the hotels — the same goes for Holy Week and long weekends. Because this is a business town, pressure falls Monday to Thursday and weekends usually leave more room. Our 2026 scans started at US$55 a night, with a typical from-price of the order of US$87.

How do I get in and around without a car?

It works without one. The airport is about 20 km northeast and a taxi into the centre runs roughly MX$300-400; the bus station sits east on Felipe Pescador, MX$70-100 by taxi. The Centro itself is entirely walkable, and beyond it there are city buses at around MX$12, rank taxis and ride-hailing apps with decent coverage.

Are the western film sets worth the trip?

Yes, if the subject interests you. Villa del Oeste and Chupaderos lie 12-14 km north on the Parral road: standing sets from the westerns shot around Durango since the 1950s. Check days and hours before setting out, as opening is irregular, and either book a tour or agree a return taxi fare — public transport is not practical.
