2.658 reviewsThe hotel is very old and neglected. Cleaning leaves a lot to be desired, they don't sweep under the beds. They don't leave a towel for hands. Dirty bath towels as well as sheets. Very uncomfortable beds. The shower doesn't work well. Dimly lit rooms and you can hear all the noise from the surrounding rooms. The elevator didn't work either.
The room was very neglected and dirty. It had dead cockroaches under the carpet, stains on the mattresses and sheets, and mites in the mattresses. The shower was clogged, and the entire bathroom was flooding. The lighting was poor, the TV didn't work, and there was no signal. The receptionist was rude and arrogant, threatening to evict us if we continued to demand that our problems be resolved and downplaying other issues regarding the room. I do not recommend it at all. If you have the opportunity to stay at this hotel, pass it up.
This hotel is getting more and more run-down. I've been staying there for three years now, not because I want to, but because my job puts us up there. I wish they could invest a little money in it, as the area is excellent.

When to go
Guadalajara boasts one of Mexico's best urban climates: spring-like most of the year, with November to May dry and sunny. From June to September a storm rolls through most afternoons — heavy, brief and almost welcome, since it cleans the air and cools May's heat, the hottest month.
Prices hold steady with two exceptions: the International Book Fair in late November and early December genuinely fills the city, and big events at Expo Guadalajara do the same for scattered days. The October festivities add atmosphere without spiking rates.
The rainy summer is the cheap season; with a free calendar, May for heat and the Book Fair for crowds are the only things to dodge.
Getting there and around
The airport sits south, 25-45 minutes from the Centro or Americana depending on traffic: a registered taxi runs about MX$350-500 at 2025 prices, apps somewhat less from departures. Overland, the new bus terminal connects the whole west; Mexico City is 6-7 hours by bus or a short flight.
The city is lived zone by zone and crossed by car: between Centro, Americana, Zapopan and Tlaquepaque allow 20-40 minutes a hop. Within each zone walking works well, and the light rail (three lines) links Centro and Zapopan with surprising efficiency.
For Tequila, tours leave early from the Americana and Centro; the tourist train is the expensive, festive version. With your own car the highway does it in an hour — and the agave towns around it earn the detour.
Where to stay, zone by zone
Colonia Americana is the answer for most: Mexico's neighbourhood of the moment, with Avenida Chapultepec as its spine — cafés, revived cantinas, cocktail bars — and boutique hotels in early-1900s townhouses. Everything walks, nights are on foot, and the Centro is 10-15 minutes away. In our 2026 scans the city's typical rate was US$72, with the Americana a notch above.
The Centro Histórico puts the cathedral, Orozco's murals in the Hospicio Cabañas and the arcades at your door, with veteran hotels from US$16 — the lowest entry price among the big cities in our scan. The trade: it powers down at night and a few blocks ask for judgement.
Zapopan-Andares is the executive and luxury pole: new towers, first-rate malls and the international chains — practical with a car, far from everything else. Tlaquepaque, southeast, offers the village version: courtyard hotels among craft workshops and afternoon mariachi at the Parián; charming, though 25-40 minutes from the rest of your itinerary.
By profile: first visit, the Americana without hesitation; work trip, Zapopan-Andares or Expo depending on your meetings; tight budget, the Centro chosen block by block; craft-shopping trip, Tlaquepaque, which also serves the best courtyard afternoons. Tonalá, further out, is for the Thursday and Sunday wholesale markets — visit it, do not sleep there.
A note on distances that fools people: 'Guadalajara' listings can sit in Tlajomulco or by the airport, technically metropolitan and practically an hour from your dinner. Check the pin against the Chapultepec-Centro axis before booking anything cheap.
Eating and going out
Guadalajara eats with its own identity: torta ahogada — the defining local dish, spicy by design — goat birria, carne en su jugo, and tejuino to wash it down. The classics live in stalls and fondas of the Centro and the markets: San Juan de Dios, one of the largest covered markets in the Americas, is total immersion. A market breakfast runs about MX$60-100 in 2025; a fonda lunch, MX$90-150.
The Americana holds the other extreme: the liveliest restaurant and specialty-coffee scene in western Mexico. Between the poles, Tlaquepaque serves courtyard meals with mariachi.
Tapatío nightlife is big: century-old cantinas in the Centro, cocktails and electronic rooms on Chapultepec, and serious mariachi at the Plaza de los Mariachis or the Parián. This is tequila's cradle: order it neat, with sangrita, and distrust any menu that hides it in coloured margaritas.
One eating strategy that pays here: do the markets at lunch, not dinner — San Juan de Dios and the neighbourhood mercados wind down by early evening, while the Americana's kitchens run late. And Sunday morning belongs to birria: the classic goat houses fill with families from nine, and arriving before ten is the difference between a table and a queue.

Two local calendar notes: the October festivities stretch weekend demand across the whole month, and Chivas matches at the Akron stadium move Zapopan's occupancy on Saturdays — check fixtures if your hotel is that side.
