About staying in La Paz
La Paz is the capital of Baja California Sur and it lives facing the water. The malecón, Álvaro Obregón, is where most hotels sit: sea-facing rooms, seafood counters and an orange sunset every evening over the bay. Two or three streets inland the old centre — the cathedral, Jardín Velasco, Madero and Esquerro — holds the smaller, cheaper hotels. North towards Pichilingue, the CostaBaja marina gathers the expensive resort end, which only works with a car. Our 2026 scans logged 19 hotels with a real price: from US$38 a night and a typical rate of about US$134. Not cheap, but it is the doorway to Espíritu Santo and Balandra.

Which area should I book in La Paz?
On the malecón if you want the sunset from your room and everything on foot — the obvious choice, and the noisiest at weekends. In the historic centre, three streets back from the water, you get the small hotels and the lowest rates in our scans. CostaBaja only makes sense with a car and a bigger budget.
When is it cheapest and most expensive?
July to October is cheapest: 35°C and up, heavy humidity in August and September, and hurricane season. High season runs November to April, with the best weather and whale sharks in the bay; the peaks are Christmas, New Year, the February carnival and Holy Week, when booking ahead stops being optional.
How do I arrive and get around without a car?
Manuel Márquez de León airport is about 11 km out, with no useful public transport: an authorised taxi or van runs on the order of MX$350-450 to the malecón. Ferries from Mazatlán and Topolobampo dock at Pichilingue, 20 km north. In town the malecón is walkable end to end, city buses cost about MX$15, short taxis MX$80-150.
Do I need a car for Balandra and the whale sharks?
For Balandra and El Tecolote, some 25 km north, a car helps a lot; a taxi means paying the round trip and the wait. Balandra caps visitors by timed access, so go early. Whale sharks and Espíritu Santo are run only by authorised operators with regulated numbers, leaving from the malecón in the morning.
