About staying in Morelia

Morelia keeps one of Mexico's noblest historic centres — rose-pink stone, arcades, an aqueduct of 253 arches — and that is where to sleep. The Centro's hotels occupy viceregal mansions around the cathedral and Calle Madero; many are heritage pieces themselves. Up in Santa María de Guido, on the southern ridge, a few hotels overlook the city, and Altozano is the new mall district, useful with a car. Our 2026 scans logged 32 hotels with a real price: from US$24 a night and a typical rate of about US$71 — viceregal elegance here costs half what San Miguel charges. Honestly: Morelia is the gateway to the monarch butterfly route and to Pátzcuaro's lakeside Day of the Dead, and on those dates — November twice over — the Centro's hotels sell out months ahead.

Morelia hotel FAQs

Where should I stay in Morelia?

In the Centro Histórico, within blocks of the cathedral: the stone mansions are the experience and everything — arcades, museums, the famous sweets — is on foot. Santa María offers views and cool air on the ridge. Altozano only pays off with a car and shopping plans. On Saturday night, the illuminated cathedral is the event.

When is it most and least expensive?

The peaks are plain: Day of the Dead — Morelia is the base for Pátzcuaro and the lake villages — and the International Film Festival in October. November to March also brings monarch-butterfly travellers. Cheapest: May-June and the rainy summer, with the city calm and green.

How do I get from the airport?

Morelia's airport is about 30 minutes from the Centro by highway; a taxi runs about MX$300-450. From Mexico City the bus takes 4-4.5 hours for around MX$500-700, leaving frequently from Terminal Poniente. The bus station is 10-15 minutes from the Centro.

What should I know before going?

That Morelia anchors serious day trips: the monarch sanctuaries — El Rosario, Sierra Chincua — are 2-3 hours away and open November to March; Pátzcuaro is an hour. The city sits at 1,920 metres: mild days, cold nights. And try the morelian sweets at the Centro's museum-shop.
