About staying in Puebla
Puebla splits into two hotel cities. The UNESCO-listed Centro Histórico holds the hotels with soul: talavera-clad mansions and courtyards within blocks of the Zócalo, the Capilla del Rosario and the sweets markets. Angelópolis, to the southwest, is modern Puebla — towers, malls and executive hotels — practical with a car and empty of colonial charm. Cholula, 20-30 minutes away, works as a third option: a university-town feel, the great pyramid, and livelier nights than you would guess. Our 2026 scans logged 69 hotels with a real price: from US$22 a night and a typical rate of about US$63 — excellent value two hours from the capital. Honestly: many visitors only day-trip from Mexico City; staying the night is exactly what lets the city win you over.
Puebla hotel FAQs
Where should I stay in Puebla?
In the Centro Histórico, within five blocks of the Zócalo: that is where the courtyard mansions that justify the trip are, and everything is walkable. Angelópolis only makes sense for work or if you prefer malls and parking. Cholula is the relaxed alternative, with the pyramid and student bars, half an hour from the Centro.
When is Puebla cheapest?
Midweek, almost always: the Centro fills with weekend escapes from Mexico City. The rainy season, June to September, softens rates. The peaks come on Cinco de Mayo — the holiday belongs to this city — at Holy Week and on long weekends. Book ahead for those.
How do I get there from Mexico City or the airport?
Most people arrive overland from Mexico City: direct buses leave even from the capital's airport, take around 2 hours and cost about MX$250-450. Puebla's small airport at Huejotzingo is 30-40 minutes out, with taxis at about MX$350-500, but flights are few.
What should I know before going?
That Puebla is eaten: mole poblano, chiles en nogada from July to September, cemitas and the sweets market — plan meals the way you plan museums. The city sits at 2,135 metres, so nights cool off year-round. And the volcanoes show best early, before the haze climbs.
