On arrival in the late afternoon, a golf cart took us from the innocuous main entrance along a winding path to a point where a member of the concierge met us. The cart does not go beyond this point, which is a maze of footpaths. We were taken on a quick tour of the hotel so we can remember the way to the restaurants (3), the pools (2), the beach (1) and, more importantly, how to get back to our room (or suite in our case). Planning your trip to Puerto Aventuras
When to go
December to April delivers the weather the Riviera Maya is sold on: 26-30°C, bearable humidity, calm sea, little rain. It is also the priciest window, peaking hard over Christmas, New Year and Holy Week, when much of the local stock imposes minimum stays of five or seven nights. Book those dates far ahead or skip them.
May and June are the hinge months: heat climbs, prices drop and the marina goes quiet midweek. July and August bring Mexican families and long European holidays, so rates firm up again without reaching winter levels. Midday feels above 35°C with humidity, so plan the water early and the shade afterwards.
The honest caveat is sargassum. From roughly April to August, with big swings year to year and even week to week, seaweed lands on this east-facing coast. The small bays here sometimes escape it and hotels rake at dawn, but nobody can promise you turquoise water. The marina and the pools are unaffected either way.
September and October are the cheapest and least predictable months: afternoon downpours, heavy air and the peak of hurricane season. Travel then if the savings matter, but choose refundable rates and leave slack around your flights rather than stacking rigid plans.
Getting there and around
Cancún airport sits about 100 km north on Highway 307, an hour to an hour and a quarter with clear traffic. Tulum airport is closer, around 65 km and forty-five minutes, though it handles fewer flights. A private transfer from Cancún typically costs on the order of MX$1,500-2,500 per vehicle; an airport taxi will be more.
Without a car the chain is simple: an intercity bus from the airport to Playa del Carmen, roughly MX$250-350, then a Tulum-bound colectivo van for about MX$40-60. The van stops on the highway at the entrance, some 1.5 km from the marina. With luggage under a midday sun that walk is punishing, so arrange a local taxi from the gate.
Inside, a car is optional. The marina loop, the shops and the beaches are fifteen to twenty minutes apart on foot, and plenty of guests use bicycles or golf carts. Local taxis run on a fixed tariff that feels steep for short hops; a run into Playa del Carmen can be in the order of MX$400-600 each way.
Renting a car changes the trip if you want the cenotes along the 307, Akumal, Cobá or Tulum on your own schedule. Parking inside the development is easy and there are filling stations on the highway. Drive in daylight: the 307 has speed bumps, long U-turn detours and dark, fast stretches at night.
Where to stay, zone by zone
The marina is the centre of gravity. Restaurants, the mini-market, dive shops and the late-afternoon buzz all cluster around the docks and canals, along with the rooms that overlook the water. It is the easiest base if you arrive without a car and want to walk to dinner. In season, expect some music and movement until around midnight.
Fatima Bay, to the south, is the longest stretch of sand and the quietest corner. You sleep facing open sea, step straight onto the beach and see fewer people. It suits couples and families with small children; the marina is a ten to fifteen minute walk through the development, entirely inside the gate.
The inland streets towards the golf course are the budget zone: houses and condo blocks in greenery, no sea view, walkable to the beach but exposed to full sun. They pay off if you have a car, or if price and a kitchen matter more than a balcony. Check on a map exactly how far your door is from the water.
Outside the gate, the settlement on the west side of the 307 holds the cheap local lodging — no beach, no charm, useful only if the budget dictates. And if you are torn between neighbours: Akumal is better for turtles and snorkelling, Playa del Carmen for nightlife, Tulum for ruins and cenotes.
Eating and going out
Almost all the eating happens around the marina: seafood, Italian kitchens, terrace breakfasts and a couple of bars looking out at the boats. Prices track Playa del Carmen rather than a fishing village — budget on the order of MX$250-450 for a main course and MX$150-250 for breakfast, tip on top.
Many units come with a kitchen, and that reshapes the budget. Inside the gate there are convenience shops and a small supermarket with a short, expensive range; if you have a car, do the big shop at the supermarkets in Playa del Carmen before you drive in. Bottled water, fruit and beer are what you will miss first.
Cheap, local food means crossing the highway to the village on the west side: home-style kitchens and taquerías at roughly MX$80-180 for a full meal. It is a few minutes by car or taxi, but there is no continuous pavement, so walking there after dark is not a sensible plan.
Nightlife is deliberately thin: families, boat people and dinners that finish early. Midweek and in low season, most places shut soon after ten. If you want bars, live music and late hours, factor in twenty to twenty-five minutes each way to Playa del Carmen and the cost of the taxi home.
Booking well
The sample is small and worth stating plainly: our 2026 scans found 6 hotels here with a real price, from US$48 a night against a typical from-price of the order of US$253. That spread reflects two different products — simple rooms on one side, beachfront property on the other — rather than a smooth ladder of prices.
Because much of the inventory is privately owned condos, always weigh the nightly figure against what comes with it: kitchen, laundry, cleaning, number of bedrooms. For a week with a family, a condo usually beats two hotel rooms; for two or three nights, the cleaning fee and the check-in logistics rarely make it worthwhile.
Check the exact address on a map before you pay. Several places advertise as Puerto Aventuras while sitting on the highway or on a neighbouring beach, outside the gate, which kills any chance of walking to dinner. Ask what beachfront means in practice, too: access can be shared and the bays are short.
Reserve months ahead for December, January and Holy Week, when stock vanishes and minimum stays appear. Ask which fees are excluded — cleaning, gate access, parking, deposits — and if you are travelling between September and November, pay a little more for free cancellation and let hurricane season take care of itself.
