3.22132 reviewsFirst and last time. The rooms are outdated and not well maintained. We had only two bath towels for two guests—no hand towels, no bath mat, and hot water came and went. The carpet was extremely dirty and made us uncomfortable walking barefoot. One housekeeping staff member even asked a guest to wait while she used the elevator with her cart—very unprofessional. The place is overpriced, and the photos online are completely misleading compared to the disappointing reality of the rooms.
This used to be a nice place to stay. What happened? We had a horrible stay. First...they have a rude and obnoxious desk clerk AARON who goes into a women's rooms without knocking while they shower. Horrible experience for my sister..AARON when confronted copped an attitude with me and became ruder and acted like so what. Loud Long Term Construction going on . They wouldn't switched rooms at first until I demanded. The first day, I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, thinking the most be getting back on their feet or something. Secon day fist thing in the morning free brake fast. Just one choice. Planning your trip to Rosarito
When to go
Rosarito's best weather arrives late. July through September brings days of 24-27°C, clear skies and the Pacific at its least punishing, around 19-20°C. It is also when Californian plates fill the boulevard at weekends and rates climb hard. Midweek in those same months is the sweet spot if your schedule allows it.
May and June are Baja's classic bait-and-switch: the marine layer settles in overnight and some days never burns off at all. It stays cool, the beach looks grey, and prices are lower for a reason. October is usually the rounded month — sun, water still bearable, thinner crowds, low-season pricing.
November to February is not beach weather: 17-19°C by day, wind, the occasional rainstorm. It works for long walks, seafood lunches and grey whales passing offshore between December and April. March brings American spring break, and Holy Week fills everything again; both are peaks in price and in volume.
Getting there and around
There is no airport in Rosarito. Tijuana's is about 40 km away, 45 to 70 minutes depending on city traffic, and reachable on foot from the San Diego side via the Cross Border Xpress bridge if you hold a boarding pass. From there, take a taxi or a pre-arranged transfer, and agree the fare before you get in.
Driving down, you cross at San Ysidro or Otay Mesa and follow the Tijuana-Ensenada toll road, the 1D, where booths cost in the order of MX$60 each. The free road, Mex 1, saves the tolls but is slower and not a road to drive after dark. Mexican car insurance is mandatory: buy it before you cross.
You can do this without a car. Buses and shared route taxis run from Tijuana and the border area to Rosarito for roughly MX$40-60 and take about an hour. In town, route taxis cost a few tens of pesos, and a regular taxi runs somewhere around MX$100-150 for a short hop.
The central stretch of Bulevar Benito Juárez is walkable end to end, and that is where the hotels, seafood joints, bars and craft stalls sit. For Puerto Nuevo, 12 km south, for the Popotla fish camp or the surf at Kilómetro 38, you need a car, a taxi, or a driver hired for the round trip.
Where to stay, zone by zone

That is thin supply and expensive by Mexican standards, because the demand is American and weekend-shaped. A large share of local lodging is condos and rental houses rather than hotels.
The centre, along Bulevar Benito Juárez and the lanes dropping to the sand, is the sensible choice without a car: you walk to dinner and to the beach. The trade-off is Friday and Saturday noise — ask for an inside room or a high floor if you sleep lightly.
South of town, the coastal corridor between kilómetro 27 and 33, toward Calafia and Popotla, is towers on the bluff with pools and long views. Quiet nights and good sunsets, but you drive for everything. Check recent reviews: in condo-hotels, upkeep varies sharply from one building to the next.
Further south, Primo Tapia and Puerto Nuevo have small inns beside the lobster houses, while La Misión, Cantamar and Kilómetro 38 are surf territory with basic rooms. Playas de Tijuana, to the north, only makes sense if crossing the border early matters more to you than actually being in Rosarito.
Eating and going out
Seafood is the reason to eat here. Fish and shrimp tacos for a few tens of pesos at stands and in the market, tostadas, clams, sea urchin in season. Popotla is a working fish camp where you buy the catch off the beach and have it cooked on the spot — go early, bring cash, don't be in a hurry.
Puerto Nuevo runs on lobster done the local way: split, fried, served with beans, rice and flour tortillas. Expect on the order of MX$400-600 a plate depending on size, and full tables on Saturdays. It is not cheap and does not pretend to be; treat it as an event lunch and drive back before dark.
Nightlife concentrates on Bulevar Juárez, and in season it is loud, cheap-drink territory, March above all. It is a weekend scene, not a Tuesday one. If you go out, walk or take a taxi; drinking and driving here is the fastest way to end a holiday. Keep cash close and leave nothing visible in the car.
For a break from all that, Ensenada is just over an hour down the toll road and the Valle de Guadalupe wine country about ninety minutes away. Both work as day trips from Rosarito, and both reward an eight-in-the-morning start rather than a slow, late one.
Booking well
With only 8 hotels in our scans, supply is short and it does sell out. Weekends, long US holiday weekends (Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day), spring break and Holy Week want booking weeks ahead. Midweek and in winter, you can usually turn up without a reservation and find a room.
Many hotels quote in dollars and add tax on top: VAT plus the state lodging tax can push the final bill noticeably above the headline figure. Ask whether the rate is all-in, whether parking is included, and what an ocean view actually means in that particular building.
For winter nights, confirm heating — air conditioning is beside the point here, cold damp is not — and whether the pool is heated. Read reviews from the past year, especially at the bigger coastal properties, where your experience depends on which wing you land in and how recent the renovation was.
Then plan your departure around the border. Northbound waits at San Ysidro or Otay can run one to three hours on Sunday afternoons. One extra hotel night, or a very early checkout, costs less in the end than sitting in that queue with a flight to catch.
