4.3253 reviewsThe hotel and service were fantastic. Literally the only complaint I have was that there weren’t enough outlets next to the bed. We had to unplug something to plug our phones in. Otherwise the drinks and food were great, the staff was extremely polite and the hotel is gorgeous. I believe her name was Jacki- but the lady at the front desk is an angel. Despite a language barrier, she was a HUGE help in finding us a taxi to Mexico City at 7am to catch a flight when we were in a bit of a bind. I couldn’t thank her enough!
The hotel is ok. Definitely price is way to high for what it is. The rooms are simple with one window to a court yard. The dirty rag by the bed is simply gross. The beds are very uncomfortable, they put a lot of pillows on the bed and none is comfortable enough to sleep on. The junior suite was nice size, the water gets hot fast and has great presdure. We had jacuzzi bath in the big size bathroom. TV doesn't offer any channels in English, no Netflix or any other premiumchannels( not complaining, just for information only) They advertise pool, which is silly. The " pool" 1 foot deep with cold…
1st time staying at this colonial but stylish hotel. Worth every penny, expectations were surpassed. Special thanks to staff, they were so nice and always making sure you were comfortable and to assist you with anything. Their restaurant food was delicious, amenities superb, and great location. Planning your trip to Atlixco
When to go
The climate is the local selling point. The valley sits at roughly 1,840 m and delivers 25-28°C days for much of the year, with cool evenings from December to February when you will want a jacket after seven. Rain arrives June to September, usually as short, heavy afternoon storms that leave the countryside green and the nurseries working flat out.
The calendar matters more than the thermometer. From mid-November to early January the Villa Iluminada turns the town into a weekend destination. The last Sunday of September brings the Huey Atlixcáyotl, the dance festival on Cerro de San Miguel, and beds go fast. Holy Week and Mexican long weekends tighten availability too.
The honest caveat: Popocatépetl is right there and occasionally dusts the valley with fine ash. It rarely stops anything, but check the CENAPRED bulletin before you travel if that worries you. And if you came for quiet, skip Saturdays in December — between six and ten at night the centre is a slow-moving crowd.
Getting there and around
Coming from Puebla is the simple option: 30 kilometres on the Vía Atlixcáyotl or the old federal road, about 40 minutes, with buses and shared vans leaving the CAPU terminal all day for something in the MX$40-60 range. Late departures back to Puebla dry up early in the evening, so check the last one before you commit to dinner.
From Mexico City, budget two and a half hours via the Puebla motorway and then the Atlixcáyotl; the Cuautla and Izúcar de Matamoros route is slower and prettier. Hermanos Serdán airport at Huejotzingo is around 45 minutes by taxi. From Mexico City's main airport, traffic included, three hours is the realistic figure.
You do not need a car in town. The centre is compact and flat, and the sights fall within a ten-minute radius; the exception is the stepped climb up Cerro de San Miguel, which is steep and worth doing before the heat. Local taxis cost around MX$40-60. For the nurseries, Metepec or the springs at Axocopan, you need a taxi, a van or your own car.
Where to stay, zone by zone
The historic centre is the obvious call without a car. Around the Plaza de Armas, the arcades and the streets by the former Carmen convent you will find mansions turned into small hotels and plain family-run inns, with cafés and restaurants at the door. The trade-off is noise: on festival weekends the square runs late and street-facing rooms hear all of it.
The lanes rising towards the San Miguel neighbourhood are the middle ground: quieter, valley and volcano views from some rooftops, and the centre a ten to fifteen minute walk away. Just remember the return leg is uphill and a few stretches are poorly lit once the shops shut.
Along the Puebla road and in the surrounding countryside sit the hotels with gardens, pools and space for families, some near Metepec. You sleep well, but you depend on a car for dinner in town, and several driveways have no pavement or lighting if you arrive by taxi after dark.

Eating and going out
Eating here happens on the square and in the market. Under the arcades there are terraces for a late breakfast and a slow look at the day; in the municipal market you get the genuinely cheap version — broths, stews, café de olla. A decent set lunch runs around MX$100-150, and the tablecloth places in the centre roughly double that.
The cooking is straightforward Puebla state: mole, cecina with grilled onion and cheese, chalupas, memelas, basket tacos mid-morning and barbacoa early on Sundays until it runs out. In December the centre fills with stalls selling esquites, buñuelos, ponche and candy floss; dinner is eaten standing up in the street, which is half the point.
Nightlife is modest and it is fair to say so: a few bars and cafés near the zócalo, kitchens closing around ten midweek, and not much after that. The real evening plan is the plaza, an ice cream and a bench. If you want a long night out, Cholula and the city of Puebla are under an hour away.
Booking well
Book one to two months ahead for the Villa Iluminada weekends, for the Huey Atlixcáyotl in late September, for Holy Week and for Mexican long weekends. Outside those dates, and especially Tuesday to Thursday, a few days' notice is usually enough and the rate you get will be noticeably friendlier.
Check three things before you confirm: whether Saturday carries a surcharge, whether festival dates impose a two-night minimum, and whether parking is included — in December that is worth real money.
