About staying in Chetumal

Chetumal is Quintana Roo's quiet capital, facing a manatee bay a step from Belize, and its hotels are functional: mid-range places along the bay boulevard — the nicest zone, with breeze and malecón — simple rooms in the grid-plan centre, and new chains toward the Bacalar exit. Our 2026 scans logged 21 hotels with a real price: from US$26 a night and a typical rate of about US$58 — errand-city prices, not resort ones. And that is its role for most travellers: an overnight link between the airport and Bacalar — 40 minutes away — the Belizean border, or the Costa Maya. Honestly: Chetumal does not compete on beaches — its bay is for strolling, not swimming — but the Museum of Maya Culture, the market's cochinita tacos and the border-town calm carry their own reward.

Chetumal hotel FAQs

Where should I stay in Chetumal?

On the bay boulevard if you can: sunsets, a malecón to walk, and the best restaurants near. The centre wins on price and for errands. Toward the northern exit, the new chains suit an early drive to Bacalar or Mahahual.

When is it cheapest?

Prices sit low and steady most of the year: demand is work, government and transit. They rise somewhat over national holidays — Holy Week, summer, year-end — when Bacalar overflows and its surplus sleeps here. The June-to-November rain and cyclone season is the softest stretch.

How do I arrive and move on?

Chetumal's airport is 10-15 minutes from the centre, about MX$150-250 by taxi. The Tren Maya and ADO buses link the state's north; colectivos and taxis reach Bacalar in 40 minutes. Belize is crossed at the Subteniente López bridge or by boat to San Pedro — passport in hand.

What should I know before going?

That Chetumal is more useful than glamorous: use it to sleep well and cheaply, leave early for Bacalar or the border, and give the Museum of Maya Culture two hours — the southeast's best on its subject. The bay has manatees: boat trips leave from the malecón when the weather allows.
