It was a great experience in my opinion. I myself was surprised for what I saw, it was really expect the unexpected. Recommend 100% although be mindful that it is a remote place so long travel and drive should be planned accordingly. I mostly travel solo but this place can accommodate a big group/family trips. It sucks that around this time July 22, 2025 you wont be able to enjoy the beach due to seaweed that were brushed up ashore and made the ocean look dirty. The rooms are decent for the price and they do have AC. The beach outside of the hotel is great and their staff is very friendly. The front desk reception was excellent and they let us check in earlier since we arrived earlier than we expected.
Planning your trip to Chetumal
When to go
The kind window runs December to March: 28-30°C, humidity you can live with, and evenings on the bay that ask for sleeves. It is also nortes season — two or three days of wind, lead-grey sky and drizzle that empty the malecón. Prices barely register the difference: high season here is a nuance, not a jump.
April and May are pure heat before the rain: 35°C with bay humidity and little shade in the grid centre. From June to November come afternoon downpours, mosquitoes at dusk and cyclone season, with a real chance that a warning closes a road or the border for a couple of days. It is also the cheapest, quietest stretch.
The rises are punctual: Holy Week, July-August and year-end, when Bacalar overflows and the surplus sleeps here. Midweek belongs to work and government travel, so Monday to Thursday the centre tightens. And the honest bit: you do not pick a month for the sea — this bay is not for swimming — but for how much heat you can take.
Getting there and around
The airport is tiny and 10-15 minutes from the centre, roughly MX$150-250 by taxi. Flights are few and mostly to central Mexico, so always price flying into Cancún and coming down overland, five or six hours. The Tren Maya station sits beside the airport and its timetables are still settling — confirm them the month you travel.
The ADO terminal is on Insurgentes, a couple of kilometres from the centre, with frequent departures to Bacalar (40 minutes), Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Tulum and Cancún, plus several daily to Mérida and Escárcega. Services to Mahahual and the Costa Maya are thin on the ground: check them before you commit a day.
The centre walks easily — flat grid, short blocks — except at midday, when the sun is merciless. Urban combis cost a few pesos; taxis work by zone, so agree the fare before getting in, in the order of MX$40-80 for a trip across town. Ride-hailing coverage is patchy; do not build a plan on it.
For the region you want a car: Kohunlich and Dzibanché are an hour west on Highway 186, Bacalar 40 minutes north, Mahahual a little over two hours. Colectivos to Bacalar run often for around MX$60. Belize is crossed at Subteniente López, with immigration formalities and a possible exit charge — leave yourself time.
Where to stay, zone by zone
Boulevard Bahía is the best address, and not for luxury: it is where the breeze runs, where the malecón waits for a sunset walk, and where the mid-range hotels with parking and a small pool cluster. The Museum of Maya Culture and Avenida Héroes are a 10-15 minute walk away. This is the zone that hovers around the US$58 typical we logged.
The grid centre — Héroes, Independencia, Obregón, the market streets — is price territory: this is where the US$26 rooms from our scans turn up, simple hotels, many of them for people passing through. You gain banks, offices and taquerías at the door; you lose quiet. Ask for an interior room and check the air conditioning actually cools.
Toward the northern exit, along Insurgentes past the airport and Plaza Las Américas, sit the new chains: predictable rooms, plenty of parking, no charm whatsoever. They make precise sense if you arrive by car at night and leave early for Bacalar or Mahahual. Walking to the malecón from there is not a plan — kilometres without shade.
By profile: one-night stop with a car, the northern exit; a full day of city and museum, the boulevard; tight budget or border paperwork, the centre. Calderitas, eight kilometres north, has scarce and very simple lodging on the water, worth it for a quiet night and a fish dinner. In every zone: insist on air conditioning and carry repellent at dusk.
Eating and going out
The base is Yucatecan with a Belizean accent: cochinita tacos early at the Ignacio Manuel Altamirano market — they run out, that is the point — panuchos and salbutes in the afternoon, relleno negro, and from across the river coconut bread and rice and beans. A market breakfast runs about MX$60-100, a set lunch MX$90-150.
Seafood here is bay and river: ceviche, breaded fillet, shrimp. Calderitas is the classic Sunday outing, palapas at the waterline some MX$120-180 away by taxi, and you generally eat better and cheaper there than downtown. With conch, mind the closed season: if it is offered out of season, be suspicious.
Nights are short, and it is only fair to say so: walk the malecón from the Monumento al Renacimiento, buy an ice cream, take a beer on a boulevard terrace, and turn in. There is some live music at weekends, but midweek the city closes early and Sunday afternoons are genuinely empty. The centre and the malecón feel calm on foot; the dark stretches of the boulevard are better by taxi.
Booking well
Chetumal is a small market with no pressure in it: 21 hotels with a real price in our 2026 scans, from US$26 and a typical rate in the order of US$58. Three or four days' notice usually does the job. The exceptions are Holy Week, summer, year-end and weeks of official events, when the capital fills at once.
Check what matters here: air conditioning that cools without roaring, hot water, parking if you are driving, and whether the room faces the avenue. On the boulevard, 'bay view' sometimes means the view from the roof terrace — ask outright before paying extra for it. At these prices a cheap non-refundable rate risks little, except in cyclone season: from August to October, pay for flexibility.
And the underlying call: if Bacalar is the real destination, do the maths. Sleeping here and driving up each day is clearly cheaper, but you miss sunrise over the lagoon, which is half the reason to go; one night in Chetumal for the museum and two in Bacalar usually works better.
