There is also a good variety of breakfast options with a very bright and inviting dinning area. I love the terrace that has a spectacular view of the city and a bar to enjoy a drink in the evenings while relaxing. Overall I highly recommend this hotel.
I stayed in two different rooms. The suite on the fifth floor was amazing. The furniture, the bathroom, the cleanliness, and the views of the city from the windows in the nearby terraces. Fantastic. I also stayed in a first floor room that was a bit dark and had a narrow doorway to the bathroom, but was otherwise very good as well. The location is ridiculously cool and convenient. Very near the center of the interesting part of town.
The location is great for walking in historic centro. Loading and unloading is a bit of a trick. Unload your bags and staff will ride with you to the parking lot which is an experience in itself, but made easier by Jesus, who is working an apprenticeship for hospitality, he was a gem! Rooms are very clean and the bed exceptionally comfortable. The shower is a flow restricted, water fiasco, but that’s not the point. Beautiful surroundings and charm abound. Great stay for sure! We’ll use this hotel again!!
Planning your trip to Guanajuato
When to go
Altitude runs the weather here, not latitude. From November to March the sky stays clear, afternoons sit around 22-25°C and January nights drop to 5-8°C — plenty of old houses in the centre have no heating, so pack layers and ask about blankets. It is the most comfortable season for climbing alleys.
March to May everything dries out: golden dust, afternoons of 28-30°C and a three o'clock sun that punishes on the shadeless slopes. Holy Week and the Viernes de Dolores fall in here, with flower altars in churches and old mine shafts — lovely days, full ones, and long-weekend rates.
June to September brings a short, hard downpour most afternoons and the only green the hills get all year. Steps turn slippery, so bring grippy soles — but this is when our scans found the softest rates, and when the funicular and the mummy museum have no queue.
Watch two local dates the guidebooks skip: the Día de la Cueva in late May and the Presa de la Olla festivities in June, when the opening of the dam sends the whole city to the park. They do not triple prices, but they fill hotels on a weekend that looked ordinary.
Getting there and around
Bajío airport (BJX), out by Silao, is the gateway: steady domestic routes and a few direct US flights. Authorised taxis wait outside, and shared vans are cheaper in daylight hours. If airfare rules your plan, flying into Querétaro or Mexico City and finishing by first-class bus is a comfortable, frequent alternative.
The bus terminal sits at Yerbabuena on the edge of town, 20-30 minutes from the Jardín de la Unión: a taxi runs about MX$100-150, a city bus a few pesos. Departures are constant to León, Dolores Hidalgo (an hour), San Miguel de Allende (an hour and a half) and Querétaro (two and a half), enough to tour the Bajío car-free.
In town you walk, and you climb. City buses thread the tunnels and grind up to La Valenciana for around MX$10-12; a taxi across town costs roughly MX$50-80 and is money well spent with luggage or on an uphill return after dark. Ride-hailing works, with fewer cars around than in a big city.
On driving, the practical detail: GPS drops inside the tunnels, the one-way system is unforgiving, and a public car park runs about MX$150-250 a day. If you arrive by car, park it on day one wherever the hotel tells you and do not touch it again until you leave.
Where to stay, zone by zone
The Centro — the triangle between the Jardín de la Unión, the Basílica and the university, plus the little plazas of San Fernando and Baratillo — holds most of the inventory: small mansions with courtyards and high ceilings. Both ends of our 2026 range live here, from US$34 up, around a typical US$71. The price is bells, terraces and singing until late.
The alleys that climb — the Pípila slopes, Cerro del Cuarto, Tepetapa — deliver the postcard view and sometimes the kinder rate, but the taxi stops below and the rest is stairs. Ask how many, and whether someone helps with bags: at 2,000 metres, fifty steps with a suitcase is not an anecdote.
Paseo de la Presa, with Embajadoras and the Presa de la Olla at its end, is the calm address: a tree-lined avenue, nineteenth-century houses, the odd garden and the odd parking space. Fifteen to twenty minutes on foot to the centre, downhill going and uphill coming back. Pastita, in the next valley, repeats the formula in a plainer, cheaper key.
Up top, La Valenciana and San Javier offer space, gardens and the whole canyon in front of you; down toward Marfil, converted haciendas come with pools and room for the car. Both need a MX$60-100 taxi to come down for dinner. By profile: first visit, the centre; couple travelling light, a high alley; family or road trip, Marfil or La Valenciana.
Eating and going out
The cooking is mining-town food: enchiladas mineras with potato and carrot, pacholas of griddled ground beef, guacamayas stuffed with chicharrón, and caldo de oso, a cold xoconostle drink sold by the cup. A set lunch in a downtown fonda runs about MX$90-150 at 2025 prices; the Mercado Hidalgo covers breakfast and sweets for less.
Choosing well: the terraces on the Jardín de la Unión charge for the view and the band, not the kitchen. San Fernando and Baratillo do better, and the streets around Positos and the university run on student prices. One altitude note — at 2,000 metres the mezcal lands sooner than you expect.
Evenings start with a callejoneada, the student minstrels who lead a singing crowd through the alleys for roughly MX$150-200 a head and finish past midnight. After that it is small, young bars: this is a university town, so July and December are noticeably flatter. Walking the centre at night is calm; empty, badly lit alleys are better with company.

Ask three things before you pay, because here they decide the trip: how many steps from where a car can stop, whether the room faces the street or the courtyard — the difference between sleeping and hearing the callejoneada — and whether there is heating, or at least enough blankets for a January night.
Driving in? Confirm whether the hotel has its own space or sends you to a public garage; MX$150-250 a day reshapes a week's budget. And think twice about a cheap non-refundable rate for October: in a market this small, any change of plan during the Cervantino is expensive to fix.
