We had a great stay at Puerta Azul. The location was perfect for us. It’s about a 20 minute walk down the beach from the center. (It’s also about a 20 minute walk down the beach to Punta Coco where the bioluminescent bay is.) We were not interested in the night life, so we liked being a little bit out of the way. The beach is gorgeous and is just steps away from the hotel. The beach club was very comfortable and we spent a lot of time sitting in the shaded chairs. The complimentary breakfast was amazing. Great hotel. The room was very spacious, comfortable and clean, as well as nicely decorated. Staff was very kind and helpful. With the free breakfast, you get to pick from the menu + coffee + juice. The servings were large and the food was delicious. Far from the center- about 25 minute walk or 200 Mexican pesos (~10eur) ‘taxi’ ride to the center. Great to be away from the noise of the center and walking on the beach felt safe in the evening though. The bar/Resto on the beach was expensive compared to those in the city although the food was good.

Westward toward Punta Cocos and eastward toward Punta Mosquito the beach opens up and the boutique hotels appear, hammocks strung over the water — pricier and quieter. Honestly: getting here takes effort — two and a half hours from Cancún plus a ferry — mosquitoes and sandflies show up the moment it rains, nearly everything is paid in cash, and when the island fills, its services strain. That is the price of slow paradise.
