Without a car, Avenida Álvaro Obregón: it starts at the Gateway bridge and lines up restaurants, offices and the US consulate, and you can walk back from dinner without feeling alone on the street. If your business is at a maquiladora, the hotels along the Periférico and near the airport save you an hour of driving a day. Downtown is cheapest and most worn.
When are rates lower?
There is no tourist high season here, just the working week. Monday to Thursday the business trips arrive and the corporate hotels fill, so booking a few days ahead matters more than choosing a month. Weekends loosen up. How do I get in and get around?
Servando Canales airport (MAM) is small, with a handful of frequencies, mostly to Mexico City; plenty of travellers fly into Brownsville (BRO) or Harlingen (HRL) and walk or drive across. Overland, the bus terminal links Monterrey in four to five hours. In town, use radio taxis called by your hotel and agree the fare before getting in.
What should I know about safety?
Tamaulipas carries the strongest travel warnings in Mexico, and they deserve to be taken seriously without dramatising daily life in the city. The local rules are simple: move during daylight, never drive between cities after dark, take dispatched taxis rather than walking late, and don't improvise highway routes. Ask at reception before any trip beyond the built-up area.
