Very friendly and professional staff. Comfortable but dirty rooms. There were dirty hand prints on the wall behind the sink from the time I checked in to the time I checked out, I stayed 5 nights. The baseboards on the furniture looked rotten and were broken and lifted throughout the room. Dirty lamp shades.
The best I can say is that, it was not overly expensive and basic security. The GM. Obviously does not care how his location is managed. Staff are there..not much more. The location needs tons of basic upgrades. Cieling tiles furniture. Repairs to the walls. Basic painting. And so much more. The included breakfast, wow. Horrible. Planning your trip to Lazaro Cardenas
When to go
This is hot-coast weather: humid year-round, highs of 32-34°C and heavy nights. The comfortable window runs December to March, when the humidity eases and midday walking is bearable. It is also when Playa Azul draws weekend visitors from the region and when Highway 200 is at its most straightforward to drive.
May and June are the toughest months before the rain arrives. From June to October the downpours are intense and concentrated, with Pacific cyclone season running into late November: power cuts, flooded stretches and landslides on Highway 37, the mountain road north. None of that is a reason to cancel, but it is a reason to leave slack in your schedule.
The other season here has nothing to do with weather. Hotels fill Monday to Thursday with port, transport and maintenance crews, then empty at the weekend. If you have any flexibility, arrive Thursday or Friday: more rooms, calmer traffic, less hurry everywhere.
Getting there and around
Lázaro Cárdenas has an international airport, but its schedule is so intermittent that planning around it is a gamble. The realistic route is flying into Zihuatanejo (ZIH) and covering the 120-odd kilometres of Highway 200, about two hours by bus or rental car. Confirm the flight first, then book the room — not the other way round.
Overland, buses pull into terminals on the main avenue from Uruapan and Morelia via Highway 37 — mountain curves, a good five hours to Uruapan and seven or eight to Morelia — and from Zihuatanejo and Acapulco via Highway 200. This is a genuine transport hub with frequent departures, though timetables shift and it is often easiest to buy at the counter on the day.
The city is long, flat and strung along Avenida Lázaro Cárdenas, and you will not walk end to end. Shared vans and city buses cost on the order of MX$12-15; a short taxi run MX$60-120; out to the port or airport area on Isla del Cayacal, budget something like MX$250-350.
One honest safety note: this is the Michoacán coast, with a visible military presence and routine highway checkpoints. Avoid driving after dark on Highway 200 and especially on Highway 37, fill the tank when you can, and ask at your hotel about road conditions before heading into the sierra or south along the coast.
Where to stay, zone by zone
The Centro and the Avenida Lázaro Cárdenas corridor hold most of what exists: plain hotels, banks, pharmacies, taquerías and the bus terminals. It is the best base without a car or on a pass-through night. The trade-off is noise — heavy traffic at all hours — so ask for an interior or upper-floor room and check that the air conditioning actually performs.
Towards the port and the industrial zone, on the Isla del Cayacal side, you find the business-style options: parking, workable wifi, early breakfast. They make sense if your appointment is at the container terminal or the plant, saving you 20 to 30 minutes in truck traffic. In exchange, there is nothing walkable after dark.
Las Guacamayas and La Mira are cheaper, more local choices, useful if you work on that side or are in transit towards Uruapan on Highway 37. Do not expect any visitor scene: these are service neighbourhoods and roadside towns with fondas and little else.
Playa Azul is the option with actual sea, about 25 km out: small, quiet, modest hotels facing the Pacific, seafood under palapas. It works if you are driving yourself. And a plain warning — there is no boutique scene here at all; our scans logged just 5 hotels with a real price, all resolutely practical.
Eating and going out
The seafood is the reason to eat out. Ceviche, aguachile, shrimp broth, whole fried fish and garlic prawns turn up in city fondas and coastal palapas; a main fish plate tends to run MX$180-280, and the midday set lunch MX$100-150. The market is the reliable bet at lunchtime, when everything is freshest and cheapest.
Michoacán shows up on the table too: carnitas in the morning, corundas and uchepos, tamales and atole from pavement stalls. Late afternoon brings the taco carts along the avenue and jugs of agua fresca; on the coast, look for tuba, the palm drink served properly cold. Carry cash — plenty of stalls take nothing else.
Nightlife is short and port-flavoured: cantinas, the occasional bar with live music, not much more, and midweek everything shuts early because the city starts before dawn. In Playa Azul the palapa kitchens wind down around sunset. If you want a sit-down dinner, aim for before nine or ten and do not leave it to chance.

In the rainy months, also ask about water storage and a backup generator.
Choose flexible cancellation. Flights into the region shift, Highway 37 closes for landslides, and work plans change overnight. Pay in pesos, keep cash for taxis and beach palapas, and do not assume the hotel can arrange port access: that credential comes from the company hosting you.
One last honest expectation: people book here for logistics, not romance. A clean, cold, secure room with parking is all you need. If the trip is for pleasure and you have a car, sleep in Caleta de Campos or Zihuatanejo and treat Lázaro Cárdenas as a stopover rather than a destination.
