About staying in Palenque

In Palenque you choose between town and jungle, and that choice shapes the trip. The centre, around the Parque Central and Avenida Juárez, is the practical option: bus terminal, ATMs, cheap dinners, motorbikes until late. La Cañada, a few blocks away, is the leafy hotel quarter — gardens, plunge pools, open-air restaurants — quiet but still walkable. Out along the road to the ruins you sleep among trees, with howler monkeys for an alarm clock and a taxi for everything else. Our 2026 scans logged 12 hotels with a real price: from US$46 a night, typically of the order of US$72. The humid heat here is constant and unforgiving.

Palenque hotel FAQs

Which area should I stay in?

If you plan to use colectivos and want dinner on foot, choose La Cañada: shaded streets, quiet nights, ten minutes from the plaza. The centre, by Avenida Juárez, is cheaper and handy for early buses, at the cost of traffic noise. The road to the ruins and El Panchán suit travellers who want real forest and do not mind depending on taxis or shared vans.

When is it cheapest, and when does it fill up?

September and October are the cheapest months and also the wettest; May and June follow. Prices climb over Holy Week, July and August, the year-end holidays and long weekends. Our 2026 scans logged twelve hotels with a real rate: from US$46 a night and a typical from-price of the order of US$72, with little slack in high season because the market is so small.

How do I get there and get around without a car?

By bus from Villahermosa (about two and a half hours), Campeche, Mérida or San Cristóbal, or on the Maya Train to the station just outside town. The local airport runs intermittently with few frequencies. Once here, colectivos to the ruins leave Avenida Juárez all day for something like MX$30, and a taxi to the site costs a bit over a hundred pesos.

How many days do I need, and what else is nearby?

Give the archaeological site three or four hours plus one for the museum, and be at the gate at eight when it opens — the heat and the tour groups arrive together around eleven. A second night covers Misol-Ha and Agua Azul, or the long day to Yaxchilán and Bonampak via Frontera Corozal. Park and INAH tickets are charged separately, in cash.
