Hear the howling monkeys in the morning (which can be seen on the property). And a short taxi to the archaeological site which is amazing.
This hotel was absolutely amazing!!! The hotel experience started before we even arrived. The hotel arranged all of our transport and excursions as well. On days when we would have a long day on the road with our excursion, they would pack lunches for us. I think what really sets this hotel apart is the attention to detail and service. Everyone at the hotel was very nice and attentive (Misael and Roberniel were so good to us, and so very helpful!). The food at the restaurant is also amazing, we ended up eating at the hotel most evenings. Also, I highly recommend the piña coladas and michelada…

Planning your trip to Palenque
When to go
Palenque is hot and humid all twelve months: days of 30-35°C, heavy air, nights that barely cool. The most comfortable window runs February to April, when rain eases and the forest still looks green. Even then the ruins fill by mid-morning, so the move is simple: be at the entrance when it opens at eight.
May to October is the true rainy season, with September and October the wettest weeks of the year. From November to January the nortes bring grey skies, drizzle and a hint of cool. Rain rarely ruins Palenque — mist drifting between the temples is half the point — but the waterfalls run muddy and the paths turn slick.
Prices follow the Mexican calendar: Holy Week, July and August, the year-end holidays and long weekends fill the town. September and October are the cheapest stretch, followed by May and June. Whenever you come, pack repellent, a light rain shell and shoes with grip — mosquitoes here have no low season.
Getting there and around
The Maya Train station put Palenque back on the rail map and changed the arrival rhythm; it sits outside town, so budget a taxi to your hotel. The ADO terminal on Avenida Juárez remains the main gate, with buses from Villahermosa in roughly two and a half hours, Campeche in five or six, Mérida in eight, and San Cristóbal in about five via Ocosingo.
Palenque airport operates intermittently and with very few frequencies; check before building an itinerary around it. The reliable route is flying into Villahermosa, some 150 km away, then continuing by bus or car. From Tuxtla Gutiérrez the drive is long and mountainous — add hours and curves to whatever the map suggests.
Colectivos to the ruins leave Avenida Juárez continuously for something like MX$30 a head, and a taxi runs a bit over a hundred pesos. Around town, taxis cost MX$40-50. Renting a car only pays off if you want to reach Misol-Ha, Agua Azul or Roberto Barrios on your own schedule rather than a tour operator's.
One honest caveat: the road towards Ocosingo and San Cristóbal sees occasional roadblocks and informal community tolls. That is not a reason to cancel, but it is a reason to travel in daylight, ask your hotel the morning you set out, and never drive that stretch after dark.
Where to stay, zone by zone
The centre, between the Parque Central and Avenida Juárez, is working Palenque: buses, ATMs, pharmacies, colectivos and cheap dinners around the corner. It is where the bottom of our price range sits, near that US$46 figure. The trade-off is traffic, motorbikes and music running late — ask for a room off the street.
La Cañada, ten minutes on foot from the plaza, is the shaded hotel quarter: gardens, small pools, restaurants under the trees. It is the best balance of quiet and walkability, and much of the typical rate we logged — of the order of US$72 a night — lives here rather than downtown.
Along the road to the ruins, and in the cluster of rustic lodgings known as El Panchán, you sleep inside the forest: simple cabins, mosquito nets, often a fan instead of air conditioning, howler monkeys before dawn. Most memorable, least comfortable — and without a car you depend on colectivos that thin out once it gets dark.
The market is small: twelve hotels with a real price in our 2026 scans. That shows in high season, when the four or five favourites sell out and what remains is either pricier or well away from the centre. Booking weeks ahead for April, July or December is not overcautious here.
Eating and going out
The cooking sits between Chiapas and Tabasco: river mojarra, plantain, chipilín tamales, empanadas and reliably good Chiapas coffee almost anywhere. The town market serves the cheapest and most honest breakfasts, and a set lunch runs somewhere around MX$100-150 depending on where you sit down.
For a proper dinner, La Cañada concentrates the terrace restaurants at roughly MX$250-400 a head, while Avenida Juárez covers cheap and fast. Nightlife is short: a couple of bars, beer of the order of MX$50, most places shuttered before midnight midweek. Nobody comes to Palenque to stay up late.
At the archaeological zone there are food and drink stalls by the entrances, pricier and limited in choice. Carry enough water — two litres a person is not excessive in that humidity — plus some fruit. If you head to the waterfalls, eat first or rely on the simple comedores beside the car parks.

Ask as well about window screens or mosquito nets, hot water, and, if the hotel faces Avenida Juárez, about street noise. Out in the forest, check whether there is a phone signal, whether payment is cash only, and how late the colectivos still run past the gate.
Two nights is the sensible minimum: one for the ruins at an unhurried pace plus the museum, another for waterfalls or for Yaxchilán and Bonampak, which is a long full day. Bring cash — the national park fee and the INAH ticket are charged separately, on the order of MX$150-200 together, and the ATMs are downtown.
