4.4644 reviewsThe people were nice. But, the room smelled of urine and mold/mildew. I woke up congested and needing my inhaler. The water pressure was non-existent. Took me an hour to wash my body and my hair (and my hair is above my ears). I did try to get another room, but I only spoke English and after they came to the room and I knew they smelled what I did— but they left me there, I gave up. I’m in Mexico, and can’t speak Spanish… so, I didn’t want to appear as a spoiled American. But these conditions were deplorable. 0 out of 10 would NOT recommend.
I have been in this hotel since 8/2021 and it's been great. All the staff members are very friendly and always willing to accommodate your needs. And having a restaurant attached is great, they have a breakfast buffet and they serve food until 11PM, food is great and everyone at the restaurant are very friendly and professional. I am here for work and like I I've said l, it has been almost a year and tho I thought about renting a place instead of staying at this hotel for so long, I don't think I would be as comfortable as I am here at the Holiday Inn.
If you have a choice, do NOT eat at the restaurant attached to the hotel. The food is good but the service is HORRIBLE! You will be waiting and waiting and waiting just to be served. You will wait twice as long for your food (that will come out lukewarm and dried out) and then you will wait even longer for the cheque and again, wait some more to pay. You might spend a half hour out of two hours actually eating. One more I sat for over 30 minutes without a server even approaching me. They walked past me and served others who came in after me. Very passive aggressive rude.
Planning your trip to Reynosa
When to go
Heat runs the calendar. From May to September the city sits in the mid to high 30s with Gulf humidity, and afternoon storms or the tail ends of tropical systems in August and September can flood whole boulevards within an hour. Air conditioning is non-negotiable, and covered parking is worth paying extra for.
Winter is mild and genuinely pleasant, with one catch: northers sweep down and drop the temperature twenty degrees in an afternoon, and a January dawn can flirt with freezing. March, April, October and November are the balanced months, with 25 to 30°C by day, cool nights and very little rain.
Season here is measured in weekdays, not months. Demand is corporate: Monday to Thursday fills with plant staff, auditors and suppliers, then things loosen at the weekend. December and Holy Week rewrite the maths, as Mexicans living in the United States drive home for the holidays and bridge queues stretch into hours.
Getting there and around
General Lucio Blanco International (REX) sits southeast of town and runs a thin schedule, mostly Mexico City and Monterrey. Plenty of business travellers fly into McAllen instead and cross the bridge. If that is your plan, check your visa is current and budget generously for the wait, which varies wildly by hour and by day of the week.
Overland, Monterrey is about three hours on toll road and Matamoros a little over an hour; the bus terminal runs frequent departures across the northeast and down to Mexico City. Three bridges matter: Reynosa-Hidalgo, beside downtown, for passengers; Pharr, which handles freight; and Anzaldúas, which siphons traffic toward Mission.
Nobody walks here. Distances are long, the avenues wide, the pavements patchy. Take a sitio taxi, one your hotel calls, or a ride app; a cross-town run costs somewhere around MX$100-150, a bit more to the airport. If you drive, stay off the roads after dark and off secondary highways, and carry Mexican insurance if your plates are American.
Where to stay, zone by zone
Boulevard Hidalgo and its southern continuation form the hotel spine: business chains with gated parking, breakfast from six and meeting rooms off the lobby. It is not a pretty district and does not pretend to be. It is functional, well connected to the industrial parks, and it is where nearly everyone here for work ends up sleeping.
Del Prado and Las Fuentes, south of the boulevard, are residential districts ringed by restaurants and shopping plazas. You can walk to dinner from your room, which in Reynosa counts as a small luxury. This is the most comfortable choice if you are staying several nights in a row.
Downtown, around the main plaza and the cathedral, is worth it only if you plan to cross on foot early in the morning: the Reynosa-Hidalgo bridge is a few minutes away. The trade-off is noise, heavy traffic, older rooms, and streets that empty out once the shops close.
If your destination is an industrial park or the airport, measure the drive before booking; the Colosio ring road and the Matamoros highway can save you forty minutes in the dawn rush. Eating and going out
This is northern cooking with no ornament: grilled beef, cabrito, flour tortillas, machacado con huevo for breakfast. The late-night taquerías and the grill houses on the south side are the honest highlight of eating here. A set lunch runs roughly MX$120-180; a proper steak dinner costs considerably more.
The Gulf is close enough for seafood — shrimp cocktails, fried fish, ceviche — usually in neighbourhood places rather than white-tablecloth restaurants. The downtown markets serve cheap breakfasts from early morning and shut by mid-afternoon. Portions are generous everywhere, so order less than you think you need.
Nightlife exists, but it is local and low-key rather than a scene. The sensible pattern is dinner early, a taxi back to the hotel, and no improvised detours after dark. Frequent visitors who want a real night out tend to cross to McAllen and stay on the Texas side.

Book midweek nights well ahead. From Monday to Thursday the decent hotels sell out on plant shutdowns, audits and supplier visits, and late bookers end up far from where they need to be. Weekends leave more room and sometimes better rates — the normal rhythm of a business city rather than a bargain you can count on.
