About staying in Tuxtla

Tuxtla Gutiérrez is Chiapas's working capital and, for most travellers, the trip's first night: the state's main airport is here, and so is the mouth of the Sumidero Canyon. The executive hotels line Boulevard Belisario Domínguez to the west — the most comfortable zone — while the Centro, around the Parque de la Marimba, offers simple rooms with the best local evening scene: marimba plays free every night. Our 2026 scans logged 23 hotels with a real price: from US$30 a night and a typical rate of about US$49 — the cheapest of the 40 biggest cities in our dataset. Honestly: Tuxtla is hot, low-valley, and short on glamour; its role is logistics — Sumidero at dawn, Chiapa de Corzo at midday — before climbing to San Cristóbal, an hour up the highway.

Tuxtla hotel FAQs

Where should I stay in Tuxtla?

On Boulevard Belisario Domínguez, in the west, for modern hotels and restaurants — the executive base. Near the Parque de la Marimba for price and local evening life. If your only plan is the canyon and onward to San Cristóbal, any hotel with an easy eastern exit saves traffic.

When is it cheapest to sleep here?

It is cheap most of the time: demand is business and transit, with soft weekends. Holy Week and Chiapa de Corzo's January Fiesta Grande — a heritage-listed celebration — lift the area. The heat presses from April to June; summer rains cool the evenings.

How do I get from the airport?

Ángel Albino Corzo airport is far out: 30-45 minutes south of the city. Authorised taxis and terminal vans charge about MX$300-450 to the centre. Heading straight to San Cristóbal, shared vans leave from the airport itself — add an hour and a quarter of climbing.

What should I know before going?

That the Sumidero Canyon is done early: boats leave from the Chiapa de Corzo pier — 30 minutes from Tuxtla — and the light and water are best in the morning, at about MX$300-400 per person. The roadside lookouts fill the afternoon. And the marimba in the park is the perfect close.
