About staying in Veracruz
The port of Veracruz splits between its storied centre and its modern neighbour. The Centro Histórico, around the zócalo and the malecón, is where the city is most itself: danzón in the evenings, café lechero at La Parroquia, the San Juan de Ulúa fortress across the harbour — veteran hotels at very low prices. Boca del Río, to the south, holds the modern towers and executive hotels on a tidier shoreline. Our 2026 scans logged 26 hotels with a real price: from US$21 a night and a typical rate of about US$57 — among the cheapest on Mexico's coast. Honestly: the city beaches are brown Gulf sand and Gulf water, not the Caribbean — you come to Veracruz for atmosphere, food and history, not the postcard — and February's Carnaval, the country's most famous, fills everything and fires up prices.

Where should I stay in Veracruz?
In the Centro Histórico to live the port: zócalo, malecón, danzón and marimba on foot — asking for an interior room, since the party carries. Boca del Río suits work trips, newer hotels and somewhat better beaches. The seafront drive between them takes 20-30 minutes.
When is it most and least expensive?
Carnaval — nine days before Lent, usually February — is the absolute peak: book months ahead. Holy Week and the summer holidays bring domestic tourism. Cheapest: the norte months, November to February outside the fiestas, when the wind hammers and prices sink.
How do I get from the airport?
The airport lies inland, 25-35 minutes from the Centro or Boca del Río; an authorised taxi runs about MX$300-450, and app rides usually cost a little less. The port is also a major bus hub: around 5-6 hours from Mexico City for about MX$600-800, arriving downtown.
What should I know before going?
That the weather has two modes: humid heat most of the year, and nortes from November to February — gales that close the port and cool the city for days. The food is the jewel: pescado a la veracruzana, arroz a la tumbada, and the café lechero ritual of clinking your glass at La Parroquia.
